My ideas are expressed through two modes of working, forms pinched from one piece of clay and slab built pieces. In the former I’m concerned with intuitive meditative responses to the medium and process and through the latter I dramatize spiritual ideas with architectural references. Both, more often than not, develop around the mystery of the vessel. Formally, I’m captivated by the plasticity of the clay as a medium from which can emerge a complex form without the subtraction or addition of material and the ability of this same plastic medium to become firm and serve as building components. Becoming fully engaged in the pinching method, I’m moving toward “pure pinching,” that is, making the goal of my “practice” to be present to the process allowing the image in the clay to document that meditative moment in a contemplative object. The need to combine these two methods remains a priority with the expectation that, as mentioned, the resultant image in the clay will reveal and explore ethereal things.
